OUR PROJECTS

Collectively, this watershed encompasses more than 80,000 acres and was implemented in order to collect the stormwater runoff, draining into three interior drainage canals (Canteen Creek, Little Canteen Creek/Harding Ditch and Schoenberger Creek).

Current System

1

Little Canteen Creek will be redeveloped in Phase I, making it deeper and maintaining a minimum width at any given point in the levee. In order to decrease the chokepoints, a storm bank could be built that will act to filter the debris to maintain the steady flow of water.

Redevelopment

2

A preliminary step to the next phase of the Spring Lake Project is a new canal system that connects the north end of the Spring Lake Retention Basin to the south end of the Indian Lake Retention Basin.

A New Canal

The redevelopment of the current interior levee includes increasing capacity, the strength of the walls, and decreasing chokepoints such that the canal system is able to handle current and future expected capacity needs. The current interior canal networks include Canteen Creek, Little Canteen Creek/Harding Ditch, and Schoenberger Creek.

Redevelop Interior Levees

The Spring Lake Retention Basin consists of approximately 650 acres of undeveloped land previously acquired by the State of Illinois and St. Clair County as part of buyout programs associated with flooding in the 1990s.

Spring Lake Basin

1

The Indian Lake Retention Basin consists of approximately 400 acres of  undeveloped land located southwest of Interstate 55 in Fairmont City.   Excess water will be pumped downstream from the Spring Lake Retention Basin into the Indian Lake Retention Basin using the newly constructed canal.

The Spring Lake Coalition will mitigate flood risk in the Metro East. Additionally, the new Spring Lake District will include ample green spaces to preserve species of plants and animals as well as economic development for an at-risk population.

Impact

3

The most effective method of reducing flood risks and controlling the flow of water in this area is the installation of retention basins.  These basins will retain storm water runoff temporarily to alleviate stress to the interior levee system during significant rainfall events.

Marketing Campaigns in 2024 require interactive digital media strategies across social, web, and video mediums.

Digital First

1

The primary goal of this campaign is to provide resources to residents of the Metro East. Information, agency access, and real time updates are crucial to keeping the resides engaged in the status of the Spring Lake Projects.

Resident Focused

2

The Spring Lake Coalition is only as strong as our network.  We will lean on relationships with agencies, community groups, elected officials, and area businesses to further our cause.

Network Driven
